Instrument panel for Powered Paragliding:

The winter is here, weather is cold and often not suitable for PPG flying. This is the perfect time to undertake a  little project. For a while I though that there must be better way to handle the amount of electronic equipment such as radios, altimeters, variometer, cameras, walkmans, GPS that we like to take with us into the air.  I sometimes looked like X-mass tree with all this stuff hanging around so I sat down and started to think about way to improve this. I needed instrument panel where I could mount all the toys that I have so they are easy to work with within my reach and at the same time I wanted these to be protected during take off and landing.

I came up with the following set up. I started with a regular writing clip board. I have removed the metal clip and this gave me nice piece of finish material for base of my instrument panel. Next I laid out all my instruments. From top left is Variometer Brauniger - Sonic, Aviation Radio - Icom A4, Camera, FRS radio Cobra - Microtalk,  GPS - Garmin Summit and no name CD player.

Than I had to figure out a way to attach all these things to the panel. For the CD player - I have used Velcro that I have glued to the panel and base of the player. Those instruments that have a belt clip (FRS radio, Aviation radio) are held by piece  bungee cord that is fed through holes drilled in the panel and tied with knots at the back

And all the rest (vario, camera, GPS) is held down by simple elastics where either side goes through holes drilled through the panel and both ends are tied together. It does not look so pretty but it will do the trick

Next was to figure out hot to protect this panel. I thought of sowing a cover but than decided to go to Wal-Mart to see what they had as far as cover goes. I have walked around until I saw a clip board binder that was just perfect. It is called Pathfinder - KODIAK. Just right size with zipper all around and couple of pockets on top.

Next step was to make sure than I do not lose my panel or the binder cover during take offs and landings. So I have used Dremel tool to cut slits for 1 inch strap through the base of the instrument panel. See pics 1 and 2. I have then placed the panel inside of the bag nice and centered and cut two slits so the strap can go through the back side of the binder cover as well.

I have then fed the strap through the binder slit ,through all  4 slits in the clip board panel and back out through the binder cover. I have secured all the individual safety instrument straps to this main 1 inch supporting strap. I have extended the one for my camera so I can take it out without fear of losing it.   Also, as you can see I have tied knot on either side of the strap so the panel can not move inside of the binder. Then I have sown up a metal cam buckle to the end of the strap. See Pic 4.

During take off I adjust the strap so the zipped up binder is nice and high but once flying I adjust it so it sits on my lap either closed or open..

The top cover folds underneath the binder.

The binder cover has a hole so even when it is zipped up there is way for the ear buds and PTT switch cables  to go through.

Happy PPG flying with your new instrument panel
